How to edit a GPX file

A GPX file is just a list of GPS points (latitude, longitude, and usually elevation and time). "Editing" it means changing those points — moving them, adding or removing them, thinning them out, or adjusting the timestamps — and saving a new file. You can do all of that free in your browser with the GPX Toolkit; nothing is uploaded.

1. Open the file

Click Open GPX file or drag your .gpx onto the map. GPX, TCX, FIT, KML and KMZ files all work — non-GPX formats are converted automatically.

2. Make your change

  • Move, add or delete a point: click a point to select it, then drag it, edit its coordinates, or delete it. In Add point mode, click the map to insert points.
  • Reduce points: shrink a dense file to fit a device limit.
  • Fix GPS errors: remove spikes that inflate your distance.
  • Crop or trim: cut the drive to the start or a forgotten stop.
  • Change the time: shift timestamps so Strava accepts a re-upload.

3. Download

Click Download GPX to save a clean GPX 1.1 file, ready for your watch, bike computer or Strava. Prefer turn-by-turn on your device? Choose Save as route.

Is it safe / private?

Yes — the file is read and edited entirely in your browser and never sent to a server, so your home location and routes stay on your device.
