Why Strava says your edited activity is a “duplicate” — and how to fix it

If you edit an activity and try to upload it again, Strava (and Garmin Connect) often reject it with a duplicate activity error. That's because these services de-duplicate uploads primarily by the activity's start timestamp (plus overlapping GPS). Two files that start at the same moment look like the same activity, even if you changed the route.

The fix: make it look like a new file

Open your file in the GPX time editor and use the Make it a new activity tools:

  1. Set a new start date & time, or shift every timestamp by a few minutes.
  2. Or remove timestamps so Strava dates it by the upload time.
  3. Optionally click Randomize file ID to give the file a fresh identity.
  4. Download and upload the new file.
Please play fair. Use this to re-upload your own edited activities — for example after fixing a bad GPS track or trimming a forgotten stop. Don't submit falsified data to segments, competitions or leaderboards.
