GPX point limits by device
Watches and bike computers cap how many points a route or course can contain. Go over the limit and the file fails to load, or the device silently drops points and mangles the shape. If your route won’t load, the fix is almost always to reduce the number of points so it fits.
Approximate course-point limits
These are practical figures reported by users; exact limits vary by model and firmware, so treat them as safe targets rather than hard maximums.
| Device family | Safe target |
|---|---|
| Garmin Edge / Forerunner / Fenix (modern) | ~500 course points |
| Garmin (older units) | ~200 points |
| Garmin handheld routes (eTrex/Oregon/GPSMAP) | 250 route points |
| Wahoo ELEMNT | no hard cap; keep large files lean |
| Coros / Suunto | ~1,000 points |
| Polar | keep files small; Flow can reject very large ones |
How to fit your device
- Open your file in the editor.
- Pick the matching preset (or type a Max points target) and click Reduce.
- Download and copy it to your device.
